Minco grew out of Silver City, a trading stop on the Chisholm Trail started in 1872 by W. G. “Caddo Bill” Williams. When the Rock Island railroad reached the area, the town moved to the end of the line and took the Minco name. Its post office opened in July 1890.
Around 1,500 people lived here at the 2020 census, all in ZIP code 73059. U.S. Route 81 runs through the middle of town, 16 miles south of El Reno and 19 miles north of Chickasha, and the northern city limits reach the Canadian River.
Local touchstones include the 1936 masonry armory (now a community gathering spot), a park on part of the old El Meta Bond College campus and the Christmas Honey Festival, held the first Saturday of December since 1990. Wind farms have gone up around Minco since 2012.
Storms are a fact of life. On March 10, 2026, National Weather Service storm data logged 1.75-inch hail about three miles west-northwest of town near State Highway 37/152 and County Street 2810, damaging solar equipment and vehicle glass. Hail measured 1.75 inches in Minco on April 23, 2022. Back on April 30, 1961, an F3 tornado destroyed a house two miles north of town.
Minco sets its own building requirements. We confirm what the city asks for before work starts.
